After two rounds of competition, 13-year-old Grace Debney led the victory gallop in the $5,000 Equiline USHJA National Junior/Amateur Hunter Derby aboard Temple Equestrian, LLC's Wisdom. Debney and her mount received scores of 89 and 90 to top the competition with a 179-point total. It was Debney's first ever USHJA National Hunter derby competition.
"This is my first big Derby," said Debney. "I did a few small Derbies on ponies, but this is the first on a horse. It was so much fun, especially in a big ring like this. He is such a good horse, he just does it perfectly. He helps me out a lot. He has the best canter ever. When I tried him, that was what I really liked. He is easy to see a distance off of and he really tries all the time. He gives me a great experience every time I ride him."
It was Debney and the 10-year-old Holsteiner gelding's handy round that truly set them apart, moving them up to top honors from their second-place position in the classic round.
In addition to the $5,000 purse and trophy, Debney was awarded an Equiline custom cooler, Equiline hunter bridle, and a Lorenzini titanium D-bit.
